Visit any craft or scrapbook store to load up on basics and extra embellishments. Don't forget to check online sources to get ideas and tips or even shop. The basics for scrapbooking are really, well, basic. Creative scrapbooking requires a paper cutter or other cutting tools--scissors, self-healing cutting mat, metal-edged ruler, craft knife. A scrapbook to last a lifetime also requires archival quality components--adhesives, paper and memory books should all be acid and lignen-free. Check products carefully to verify they are archival quality.

- Decide on what sort of organization the scrapbook should have and what color schemes to use. This is where it is really handy to have selected scrapbooks with removable pages--that way pages can be built independently and arranged later. Even with digital layouts, there's simply no replacing a photo album with pages to turn by hand. Look for scrapbook stores with kiosks for printing your digital layouts in archival quality ink!
